Alternative political parties in Australia
Party 1: The Liberal Democratic Party
Below is a copy of an email I sent the President of the Liberal Democratic Party after reading their website. I do not remember sending it, but I must have. I do not recognise the subject matter in the email, but I must have sent it.
I am assuming I was very pissed at the time, and if I look at the timestamp, 9;16 pm on my day off (a Monday) I am surprised I was even compus mentas. My wife suggested I look in my "Sent email" folder, and lo and behold, there it was.
As you can see he answered my email very well. I would still vote for them.
(Note to self: send apologetic email to Peter Whelan)
His reply:
Links and email addresses of the LDP deleted coz it won't let me post them

Subject: Preferences?
Why the frigg are you asking on your website which way your preferences
should go? Stand up for yourselves and forget the whole pre-election
preferential bullshit.
There is NO political party in Aus you want to give preferences to,
FFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You lost my vote
His reply:
Thanks for your email and sorry it has taken a while to reply, as I've been
deer hunting in Country Victoria and away from internet.
Please be patient and let me explain about the "preference" system.
The reality is that in Australia, for Federal Elections, minor parties MUST
do preference deals to improve their position and stand a chance of getting
a Senate Candidate elected. The system is such that by exchanging
preferences with other minor parties, the LDP can get someone elected. Yes,
there are many of those parties whose candidates, policies or fundamental
ideals, we do not agree with but until the rules change, we are forced to do
such deals. To put our head in the sand, or close our eyes to reality would
simply mean that all the time, money and effort put into the LDP, by our
members and supporters, would amount to zero; political irrelevance!
Using preference swaps, the LDP just missed out on getting a Senator (NSW)
elected in the 2010 Federal Election. If you check out the counting and
preference flows (e.g. Antony Green the ABC's election guru) you would see
that we got as far as outpolling the Labor Candidate for the sixth (last)
spot. However, when he was eliminated his preferences went to The Greens'
Lee Rhiannon, which pushed her over the line.
Had we been able to secure preferences from Labor for that sixth spot, we
would have been now discussing how wonderful it is having a Liberal
Democratic Party MP in Canberra.
We don't have to like it, or agree with it, but that is the system we're
stuck with.
For the House of Reps, no such preference swaps are done, so LDP can decide
which party, if any, gets our preferences, on a seat by seat basis.
Now, for your personal choice, in House of Reps elections, you can actually
decide how you vote, when you are in the privacy of the polling booth. You
don't have to follow any party ticket. You can simply place a "1" for LDP
and not select any other candidate, but your vote will be informal and not
counted. That's your choice.
Thanks for contacting me.
Regards,
Peter Whelan

Liberal Democratic Party

So I sent another email off to Peter apologising for my drunken rant. He replied immediately with " I usually fall asleep when I have had too much to drink."
I should take his advice.
PS He also wanted money.
